Maintaining a healthy lifestyle as an adult is not always easy. Finding time for healthful activities like exercise and socializing can be challenging with the demands of modern living. This is concerning, because a healthy lifestyle is essential for general enjoyment and a long life. Staying active has numerous physiological benefits, as well as mental and emotional benefits.
The Army Cadet Force is one of the largest youth organizations in the UK, but its success is dependent on our network of over 9,000 adult volunteers. Many activities that encourage a healthy lifestyle are included in volunteering with the ACF. As an adult volunteer with the ACF, here are ten healthy activities you can participate in.
1. Consume a range of meals
We require more than 40 distinct nutrients for healthy health, and no single diet can provide them all. It is not a single meal that will make a difference, but rather a balanced diet selection over time!
- After a high-fat lunch, try a low-fat dinner.
- Perhaps fish should be the next day's option after a large beef portion at dinner?
2. Drink plenty of fluidsAdults should consume at least 1.5 litres of fluid per day! Or even more if it's extremely hot or they're physically active. Water is, of course, the best source; we can use tap or mineral water, sparkling or non-sparkling, plain or flavored. Fruit juices, tea, soft drinks, milk, and other beverages can all be consumed on occasion.
3. Consume a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables are among the most important foods for providing us with enough amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. We should aim for at least 5 servings every day. For instance, a glass of fresh fruit juice at morning, an apple and a piece of watermelon as snacks, and a variety of vegetables at each meal.
4. Be Outside
With work, transportation, and family obligations, it's easy to spend very little time outside. This is to our detriment because spending time outside on a regular basis has been linked to enhanced mental health, higher vitamin D levels, increased attention and creativity, and improved immunity. Our volunteers spend a significant amount of time outside in the fresh air.
5. Check The Environment
Purchase healthful snacks. We know that if we don't buy junk food, we won't have it at school or at home, and we won't be able to eat it!
It is occasionally necessary to keep some kitchen cabinets locked in order to limit access to food stored in cabinets. However, for one family with two neurotypical adolescent boys, the cabinets remained unlocked, enabling unrestricted access to their autistic brother. A family counselor devised a scheme in which the older siblings were paid to keep the cabinets closed throughout the day.
6. Make New Friends
It can be tough to develop friends as an adult, except from work colleagues and the parents of your children's peers. The ACF makes it simple — volunteering with us means meeting a lot of other people who share your passion for mentoring and the outdoors. And with a couple of evenings a week and the occasional weekend commitment, you'll see them enough to form a lifelong friendship.
7. Make a point of eating a variety of carbohydrates-rich foods.
Carbohydrate-rich meals, such as cereals, rice, pasta, potatoes, and bread, should account for roughly half of our calorie intake. At least one of these should be included at each meal. Wholegrain foods, such as wholegrain bread, pasta, and cereals, will help us get more fiber.
8. Keep a healthy body weight
The ideal weight for each of us is determined by characteristics such as gender, height, age, and genetics. Obesity and being overweight raise the risk of a variety of ailments, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Excess body fat is caused by consuming more than we require. Extra calories can come from any caloric ingredient, including protein, fat, carbohydrate, and alcohol, although fat is the most concentrated source of energy. Physical activity expends energy and makes us feel happy. The message is straightforward: if we are gaining weight, we should eat less and exercise more!
9. Exercise Regularly
One of the most important healthy lifestyle activities you can engage in is exercise. It benefits you in a variety of ways, including increasing your fitness levels, lowering your chance of serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, improving your mental health, relieving stress, combating depression, and strengthening your immune system. Our volunteers receive a lot of exercise by leading sports teams and outdoor adventures.
10. Assisting our Community
Giving back to the community is quite rewarding. As an ACF adult volunteer, you will be involved in your community by working on environmental initiatives, visiting the elderly, and running programs for disadvantaged youngsters.
Start now! And keep changing gradually.
Gradual changes in our lifestyle are easier to maintain than major changes introduced all at once.
